The Problem

In the wake of shifts in how we communicate and share visually - accelerated by the pandemic - demand for high-quality visual content surged. Anyone can take photos from anywhere with just a smartphone, yet most people take dozens of shots to get one right, burning through storage and patience in the process.

Existing photography apps are either too complex for beginners or too shallow for anyone serious about improving. There was no single tool that offered real-time guidance, community feedback, and AI-assisted editing in one place.

“People don’t need another filter app. They need a companion that helps them learn to see, with them in the moment, before they take the actual shot.”

The Solution

SmartShot is an AI-powered photography companion app designed to help photographers of all levels - from hobbyists to professionals - take better photos with less friction. It gives real-time AI composition and lighting suggestions, integrates with a golden hour weather forecast for to allow you to plan ahead for the perfect conditions for your shoot. It also enables peer community feedback and provides a full in-app editing suite with AI suggestions to make sure you get your perfect shot!

Ideation

Starting from my research findings, I mapped the core feature set and began sketching low-fidelity screens - working through the full information architecture before touching visual design.

I moved from paper sketches of core screens (loading, search, camera, account, etc) to digital wireframes in Figma, testing the information architecture before applying any visual styling.

Branding & Logo

I designed a brand identity that felt modern and approachable - not intimidating like professional photography tools, but not toy-like either. The visual language needed to communicate precision and warmth simultaneously.

What’s Next

If SmartShot were taken further, additions would include a skill progression system that adapts suggestions as users improve, AR viewfinder overlays (grid lines, rule of thirds markers, focus peaking), a monetization model that doesn’t compromise beginner friendly positioning and integration with camera hardware APIs for more precise data.
